Defending champion, the Guyana Harpy Eagles, led by a half-century from Kevin Sinclair and useful contributions from the lower order, posted a first-inning total of 308 against the league leader, the Windward Islands Volcanoes, when the Cricket West Indies 4-Day Championship continued yesterday.
Staged at the Coolidge Cricket Ground, Antigua and Barbuda, Sinclair held the innings together as he recorded 74. Kevlon Anderson fell two runs short of a half century as he was the next best scorer for a top order that continues to struggle despite getting starts.
However, a rearguard effort led by Gudakesh Motie was pivotal in Guyana reaching their eventual total. Motie continues to display quality with the bat as he recorded 46 runs, while fellow spinner Veerasammy Permaul played a cameo of 30. Also contributing 22 and 20 runs apiece were Ronaldo Alimohamed and Nial Smith.
Darel Cyrus was the primary threat with the ball, as he recorded 5-67, while Daurius Martin and Shamar Springer tallied 2-63 and 2-75, respectively. The volcanoes at the close of day one were 12/0.
Meanwhile, Barbados Pride Trail hosts the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force by 73 runs at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain. The Barbadians sit on 99/4, with Zachary McCaskie and Kraigg Brathwaite scoring 46 and 30 runs, respectively. Khary Pierre recorded 2-18.
Red Force, in their first inning, was dismissed for 172. Amis Jangoo anchored the inning with an unbeaten 93. Jason Holder was the pick of the bowlers with 4-47, while Chaim Holder and Shaquille Cumberbatch snared 3-28 and 3-50, respectively.
Over at the Frank Worrell Memorial Ground, the Combined Campuses and Colleges Marooners trail the CWI Academy by 289 runs after ending on 11/1.
CWI Academy, in their first inning, recorded 300. Carlos Bowen-Tuckett scored with an unbeaten 76, while Johann Layne, Joshua Dorne, and Joshua Bishop supported with 63, 36, and 32, respectively. Yannick Ottley led the bowling effort for the Marooners with figures of 5-47, while Jediah Blades supported them with 3-59.
In Jamaica, at Sabina Park, on the home side, the Scorpions reached 173/6 on a rain-affected opening day against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes. Carlos Brown and Romain Morris scored 68 and 42 runs, respectively. Jeremiah Louis led the bowling lineup with figures of 3-34.
