Two fishermen are in custody over the desecration of a grave at Murphy Dam, Rosignol and one of them has confessed, according to the police.
In a statement yesterday, the police said that at about 12:30 pm on Thursday, acting on information received, Police ranks in Regional Division #5 proceeded to Lot 41 McKenzie Street, Murphy Dam, Rosignol Village, West Bank Berbice.
On arrival, one of the ranks spoke with Khalil Madramootoo, also known as Prito, a 31-year-old fisherman who resided at the mentioned address.
Madramootoo was arrested and questioned about the incident which took place between March 17th and 19th, 2024, where the tomb of 52-year-old Muneshwar Jawahir of Rosignol was broken into and vandalised. When questioned by the Police, the release said that Madramootoo admitted to being a part of the desecration of the tomb and corpse of Jawahir.
He claimed that Lindon Davis, also known as ‘Mama G’, was the person who broke into the tomb, and together they stole about $28,000 cash from the coffin. Davis, a 38-year-old fisherman from McKenzie Street was subsequently arrested, but he denied any involvement in the incident, the police said.
They both remain in custody as the Police continue to investigate the incident. Jawahir was laid to rest on February 9, 2024.
