Prime Minister Mark Phillips on Friday commissioned a 31.5 kilowatt solar photovoltaic (PV) mini-grid in the community of Baramita located in Barima-Waini.
A release from the Office of the Prime Minister said that the $37.2M project will provide renewable electricity to power government facilities, including schools and the health centre in the remote Region One village.
During the commissioning ceremony, Phillips underscored the Government’s commitment to equitable development across Guyana.
He said, “The Government that I am the Prime Minister of, we sincerely believe in, and we live for bringing development to every community throughout Guyana, whether on the coastline or in the hinterland…Many of the projects and programmes implemented today are enshrined in our manifesto – the list of promises we made to the people when we went to election in 2020.”
He said that the Government is also very committed to bridging the energy divide by providing funding for every community to have access to electricity, whether it be through generators, solar farms or hydro projects.
He was joined by Dr Mahender Sharma, Head of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), who provided an overview of the project and emphasised the need for responsible usage and care of the solar PV systems. The GEA is the lead agency for the implementation of solar farms in Guyana, the release said.
