The Old Fort Divas and the Saints Minions came up victorious in their respective categories on Friday evening as the Guyana Hockey Board’s (GHB) Kellogg’s sponsored U-14 Boys and Girls Indoor Developmental League concluded at the Marian Academy Auditorium.
The Old Fort Divas faced the Hikers Hockey Club Junior Jets in the girl’s finals in a thriller, which required a penalty shoot-out to decide the outcome after full time ended 2-2.
Keitana Percival opened proceedings for the Divas in the seventh minute with a field goal, but Trinity Greaves had an immediate answer to equalise for the Junior Jets in the very next minute.
Greaves would be the game-changer for her side after they went down 1-2, with Tinashe Henry netting for the Divas in the 10th minute. While things looked like they were going against the Junior Jets, Greaves would find an equaliser in the 20th minute to send the game to a penalty shootout.
Both sides were on target with their first three penalties, which meant it was time for sudden death. The Junior Jets first sudden death penalty taker could not convert, and the Divas’ Keitana Percival duly found success from her penalty to give her team the title.
In the boy’s final, the Saints Minions obliterated the GCC Pitbulls 4-1 to lift the title. Fayed Mohamed netted a hat-trick for the winners, while Allister Paul also had a single goal. The Pitbulls found a consolation goal through Kristian Viapree and had to settle for second place.
In the boys’ third-place playoff, the Hikers Hatchets needled their Old Fort counterparts 1-0, with Trevion McLean scoring the only goal of the game in the 18th minute.
In the girls’ third-place match, the Saints Sensations handed QC a 3-1 defeat, with Kayira Scott (two) and Corenza Copeland (1) on target for the winners.
After the conclusion of the tournament, Trinity Greaves of the Hikers Junior Jets was adjudged the Most Promising Female Player, while Saints Minions’ Mohamed took that accolade in the boy’s category.
Additionally, the Divas Tinashe Henry and the GCC Pitbulls’ Maxwell Viapree were named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in their respective categories.
The U-14 leagues saw four weeks of competition between over eight teams and were part of the GHB’s ambitions to nourish their nursery of talent.
