Nine contestants are vying for the top three coveted positions in the upcoming Whiz Kids finals when they meet for the semi-finals tomorrow. The successful trio will then compete in the final on Wednesday at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Liliendaal, a Ministry of Education press release said.
The ministry described Whiz Kids as a game show designed to challenge pupils in English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, providing a platform to test the knowledge and speed of those preparing for the National Grade Six Assessment in May.
The nine semi-finalists are: from Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) – Belinda Mohan, 11, of C V Nunes Primary; from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) – Oshen Sooknanan, 11, of Qayyim Academy; from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) – Rachel Sawh, 11, of Montrose Primary School; Jayin Kissoon, 10, and Agnes Siju, 11, of Marian Academy; Devi Rambles, 11, of Enterprise Primary School; and Regan Beckles, 11, of Friendship Primary School; from Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) – Neisa Lewis, 11, of St John-the-Baptist Primary School; and from Region Ten (Upper Demerara-Berbice) – Kelcia Phillips, 10, of Aroaima Primary School.
Now in its third season, the release stated, Whiz Kids has showcased some of Guyana’s brightest young talents and as the competition intensifies towards the ultimate showdown, the remaining contenders face the crucial semi-final round, where only the fastest, sharpest and most knowledgeable will clinch their spots in the final.
T0he release said that Director of the Guyana Learning Channel Anieshaw Mohamed expressed her delight with the overwhelmingly positive feedback received from pupils. “I also wish to encourage pupils who have not yet seen Whiz Kids, especially if you’re sitting the NGSA or in Grade Five, to look at the past episodes,” the release quoted her as saying.
The semi-final will be broadcast on Wednesday at 7 pm on the Guyana Learning Channel and the Ministry of Education Facebook pages. Additionally, a Whiz Kids Web-Based Game Application will be launched this week, allowing pupils to play Whiz Kids from the comfort of their homes, the release said. The game will provide scores and offer answers to incorrectly answered questions, serving as a revision ‘buddy’ as well, it added.
