Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony yesterday commissioned a Simulation Clinical Skills Lab at the Charles Roza Nursing School, located in the compound of the Linden Hospital Complex.
This lab will aid in better preparing healthcare providers to handle any challenges they may face when providing care, a release from the Ministry of Health said.
Anthony stated that with the health sector having over 400 health facilities, and a desire to have 117 different types of interventions within these facilities, there will be a need for additional trained personnel. As such, the Ministry has established a hybrid nursing programme for two of its courses, and upon completion of the theoretical aspect, the simulation centre will be needed for practicals.
Anthony further explained that the simulation lab will allow students to practice as much as possible so that when they go to help patients they’re well aware of what procedures are needed.
“We started to upgrade our curriculum to make sure that it’s current and up to date with science and good clinical practices. To help us do that we’ve been working with the Pan American Health Organization, and they have been able to recruit the World Health Training Centre for Nurses in Brazil, the University of Sao Paulo, and we’ve had the opportunity of sending fifteen tutors to the University to learn how they do their training. Over the last two years, we’ve had professors from the University of Sao Paulo coming to Guyana to work with our team to make sure that we can upgrade our curriculum and develop our simulation centres”, he said.
