Senior cop Mitchell Caesar was questioned by US authorities when he entered the country on vacation leave recently.

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday said at a press conference that he was notified but would not be able to say why he was questioned. Further, it is a matter for the police to provide details, he said.

The police have provided no information. When he was asked about it, police public relations official Mark Ramotar confirmed that Caesar, who is with the Police Major Crimes Unit, was on vacation in the US.

It is unclear what Mitchell would have been questioned on but in 2022 he was at the centre of a controversy where various allegations were levelled by police whistleblower Dion Bascom in relation to the killing outside of Palm Court of Ricardo Fagundes.

Fagundes, who was a close friend of convicted drug trafficker Roger Khan, was riddled with bullets by two men outside of the Palm Court on the evening of Sunday, March 21, 2022.

At the time of the attack, he was approaching a parked vehicle owned by Khan.

An autopsy later confirmed that Fagundes was shot about 20 times about his body. Khan would later say he was the intended target of the attack.

The police recovered 30 spent shells at the scene. Sixteen were from an AK-47 rifle, while the other fourteen were from a 9mm gun.

To date, the murder remains unsolved.

In short clips extracted from a live broadcast, Bascom, who said he had been a member of the GPF for 12 years, voiced his frustration at being used by force without receiving any credit for his work.

He also said he was tired of hidden corrupt practices involving senior members within the force.

His decision to go public came in wake of his arrest in connection with a drug bust and what he described as mistreatment that he and other ranks have faced while serving the GPF.

Bascom indicated his willingness to testify before any court.

The government provided no protection to Bascom even though he would be classified as a whistleblower.
