Delah Stewart, a 40-year-old minibus driver of Tuschen New Housing scheme was yesterday placed on $350,000 bail on the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
He was the driver of a minibus that struck and killed Anita Narine last December. Stewart appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court 2 before Magistrate Alicia George where he was read the charge. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was placed on $350,000 bail on the condition that he report to the Leonora Police Station every Monday.
The matter was adjourned to 30th May, 2024.
Narine, 47, was struck by a minibus on Tuesday, December 19 last year, in Le Destin, a village located on the East Bank of Essequibo.
Investigations revealed that the minibus, BAD 6362, was proceeding west along the road at a fast rate when the left front of the vehicle struck Narine who was crossing the road.
As a result of the collision, Narine fell on the roadway. She was picked up in a conscious state by the driver and rushed to the Sheriff Hospital at Leonora where she died while receiving treatment.
