A fire suspected to be electrical in origin destroyed two houses located in the same yard in Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, leaving an extended family of eleven, five of whom are children, homeless.

Rudolph Majeed, 49, a carpenter who lived with his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren at their home located on Timmers Dam, relayed that on Wednesday morning he got up and headed down to his hammock after which he suddenly heard something burning like “dry grass” and upon checking he noticed the upper flat of his house in flames.

According to Majeed he immediately alerted his family and then attempted to battle the fire with buckets of water “but the fire couldn’t out, it run so fast, so fast, all the sofa all catch a fire.”

The fire then eventually spread to Majeed’s daughter’s house located in the same yard where she resided with her husband and two children. “By the time the fire reel reach everything flat on the ground, everything, they barely make it.”

“We lost everything, everything”, Majeed said as he noted that his two-bedroom house was furnished. “Everything lost, everything lost, we had all appliance and it gone and we had a shop at the bottom there selling lil drinks and sweet mouth things and so.”

“My daughter lost everything too, they just had to pick up and run because the fire spread so fast nobody couldn’t really do nothing”, he added.

Meanwhile, according to the man the fire is suspected to have been electrical in origin by the fire service noting that his main switch box had been switched off randomly prior to the fire. However, he didn’t pay much attention to it thinking it was something with the power supply.

The man is now contemplating his next move as his entire family is now in need of help to rebuild. He said, that he worked and saved and built his house bit by bit so that his family could live comfortably.

Both families are now seeking assistance to rebuild and can be contacted on telephone number 643-9503.
