When the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars U-15 50-overs tournament continued yesterday in Antigua, all-rounder Shamar Apple struck a defiant half-century while Rivaldo Perreira grabbed five wickets to help Guyana pull off a 14-run win over Jamaica.
While the batting looked like a work in progress, it was the Guyanese bowling attack that shone once again to defend 219.
Guyana’s skipper, Adrian Hetmyer, had won the toss and elected to bat with his side looking like they would not make a 200+ score at one point. However, a brilliant knock from all-rounder Apple, who cracked four sixes with a pair of fours to top-score with 65 off 69 balls, helped Guyana to a decent total.
Khush Seegobin stroked 46, while Hetmyer (24) and Emmanuel Lewis
(16) all got starts but could not push on in the innings.
Jamaica employed six bowlers, with Ryan Lyttleton (4-53) leading the attack. In their chase, Jamaica looked good, led by Tyson Gordon’s 57 (4×4) and Demario Hall’s 52 with four fours and two maximums, but the duo failed to carry their team over the line.
Guyana churned out yet another brilliant spell of bowling with Rivaldo Perreira (5-29), Danvir Seegobin (2-27), and Captain Adrian Hetmyer (2-49), keeping Jamaica to 205 all out in 48.4 overs.
Guyana will play the Windward Islands in round four tomorrow.
