Police in Linden yesterday said they arrested two men with some 9,979 grammes of suspected cannabis while a third was arrested for offering a bribe of $453,000 to the lawmen to release the suspects.
A release from the force said that at around 19:47 on Wednesday night, police ranks were on mobile patrol duty around Amelia’s Ward station district in Linden when they observed a white car (#PAC 9138) travelling from the Kara Kara area.
According to the release, the patrol attempted to get closer to the car, but it sped away and the driver turned into Block 42 and suddenly came to a halt. The driver and another occupant in the front passenger seat quickly exited the vehicle and took out two bulky black plastic bags from the back seat.
As they were about to throw the two parcels into the nearby bushes, the ranks quickly apprehended them and took possession of the two bags, the release said. The bags were opened in their presence, and each contained leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.
The driver of the vehicle, Keenin Fraser, a 24-year-old taxi driver from Phase 2, Central Amelia’s Ward, and the other occupant, Nacasil Charles, a 21-year-old pork knocker from Central Amelia’s Ward, were both told of the offence committed and cautioned.
It was stated in the release that Fraser said: “Officer, we can ‘wuk’ out something”, while Charles remained silent. They were both arrested and escorted to Mackenzie Police Station, along with the motor car and the suspected cannabis.
The police release further stated that upon entering the Mackenzie Police Station compound, Seon Easton, a 33-year-old construction worker, approached the ranks and offered them $453,000 as inducement to release the two suspects. Easton was also arrested and taken into police custody, and the cash was lodged.
At the station, the cannabis was weighed in the presence of the suspects, and it amounted to 9,979 grammes
The three suspects remain in police custody pending charges.
