Observances of Lailatul Qadr to be held at National Ramadan Village

The organisers of the National Ramadan Village, the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG), the Guyana Islamic Trust (GIT), the Muslim Youth Organisation of Guyana (MYO), and the Government of Guyana, will be hosting “Qiyaam Lailatul Qadr” – A night of Prayer for Global Peace, Guyana and Palestine,” according to a CIOG release on Friday.

It informed that this event, which is a first for Guyana, will be hosted at the Muslim Youth Organization Ground, Woolford Avenue, Georgetown. It commenced with the breaking of the fast on the evening of last evening and will conclude with the Fajr prayers this morning.

Further, the official programme was held after the Taraweeh prayers (specific to the Holy month of Ramadan) yesterday. It included supplications, recitation and translation of verses from the Holy Quran, an explanation of Lailatul Qadr, Quaseedas, and remarks by President Irfaan Ali and Resident Coordinator of the UN in Guyana, Yeşim Oruç.

The release pointed out that this would be the first time that Lailatul Qadr, generally observed on the 27th night of the Holy Month of Ramadan, will be marked with open-air supplication and prayers here in Guyana. Following the official programme, supplications and prayers were to be facilitated throughout the night and into the morning. Suhoor (morning meal) will be provided for all those who will commence their fast for Sunday, April 07.

The CIOG explained that Lailatul Qadr is the night when Muslims believe the Quran was first sent down from heaven to the world and also the night when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). It is described as better than a thousand months of worshipping.

According to the release, a key component of “Qiyaam Lailatul Qadr”, would be the facilitation of donations to the people of Palestine, as part of efforts to provide some assistance to those who continue to suffer and have been displaced in the ongoing conflict.

This effort, it noted, has been endorsed by the Office of the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations here in Guyana which will also provide support to facilitate the delivery of funds raised. Cash donations will be accepted with cheques payable to CIOG between the hours of 430 pm and 1130 pm.

In addition, GBTI account number 011804260012 is now open to facilitate donations from persons unable to attend or residing overseas.

The final weekend for the National Ramadan Village, which has been well attended so far, will be Friday, April 05 to Sunday April 07, the release added.
