Arson suspected in Retrieve house fire, probe launched

A fire, suspected to have been deliberately set, completely destroyed a home in Retrieve, Linden on Saturday night, leaving the sole occupant homeless. The Fire Prevention Department in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force has launched an investigation.

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) said that the alert to a fire at Lot 63 Ariwa Oval, Retrieve, was received at around 10:36 pm on Saturday.  A team responded and was on site around 10:45 pm, it added.

According to the GFS press release, upon arrival, firemen discovered a two-storey concrete building with corrugated metal sheeting fully engulfed in flames. The property, previously owned by the late Deryl Joseph and currently inhabited by 77-year-old Douglas Joseph, was completely destroyed rendering the occupant homeless.

The fire is suspected to be the result of malicious intent by unknown persons, the release stated.

The incident is now under investigation and anyone with information that could help identify the perpetrator(s) is encouraged to contact the police, the release said
