Dear Editor,
In response to the recent letter critiquing Guyana’s readiness as a tourist destination, I offer a perspective rooted in extensive global travel experience and a deep affection for Guyana’s unique charm. I’ve been visiting Guyana since 2018, and even within this relatively short span, I’ve witnessed significant improvements that signal a bright future for its tourism industry. From the bustling streets of Georgetown to the tranquil expanses of the Essequibo, each visit has revealed a country that is evolving, growing, and increasingly capturing the hearts of those who explore its wonders. Guyana is not just a viable tourist destination; it is a land poised for greatness on the global tourism stage. To the Guyanese, this greatness may seem just a part of everyday life. Yet, to visitors like myself, it represents one of the few places on Earth that offers a glimpse into the world as it once was—untouched, unspoiled, and unbelievably vibrant. The dense rainforests, sprawling savannahs, and the rich mix of cultures are not just attractions; they are reminders of our planet’s incredible diversity and resilience.
Every country’s tourism sector is on a continuous journey of development. Guyana’s path is being shaped by the rapid development of its energy sector, bringing both opportunities and challenges. Like many countries at a similar stage, Guyana is learning to balance immediate economic incentives with the long-term vision of sustainable and responsible tourism. While challenges such as overzealous taxi drivers and pushy vendors can indeed create less-than-ideal experiences, these should not overshadow the essence of what Guyana is and has to offer. It’s important to recognize that these experiences do not define a nation nor its potential as a tourism destination. Instead, they are part of the growing pains experienced by a country on the cusp of becoming a major player in global tourism. As Guyanese, what role will you play in unfolding this vibrant chapter of your country’s story? Embracing tourists with the warmth and hospitality that Guyana is known for, sharing your stories and the beauty of your land, and contributing to the positive narrative can make a world of difference. Every interaction, no matter how small, shapes a visitor’s experience and, by extension, the global perception of Guyana.
Guyana’s journey towards becoming a beloved destination for global travelers is a collective effort. It requires the participation of every Guyanese, from the policymakers to the street vendors, to believe in and champion the intrinsic value of their country. It’s about looking beyond the immediate and working together to create an inclusive, sustainable, and enriching tourism ecosystem that will thrive for generations to come. As someone who has traveled to over 100 countries and all seven continents, I am convinced that the world’s tourists are not just willing but eager to explore the wonders of Guyana. The question now is, what are we all going to do to help make that happen? From my perspective, continuing to visit, share, and celebrate Guyana is just the beginning. I am committed to being part of this journey, supporting the nation’s tourism development in any way I can, and eagerly looking forward to my next visit. To the people of Guyana, your country is a gem waiting to be discovered by many more around the world. Your positivity, hospitality, and pride in your national heritage are the keys to unlocking this potential. Let’s continue to work together, showcasing the best of Guyana to the world, and inviting travelers to experience the incredible beauty and spirit that this country has to offer.
Sincerely,
David DiGregorio
