The third edition of the ExxonMobil Linden Schools Football Championship, which will feature eight teams competing in an initial group-stage format, was officially launched yesterday.
The event, which is slated to commence on Friday and is coordinated by New Era Entertainment, will last for the duration of eight playing dates.
The other match days are April 13th, 14th, 16th, 19th, 20th, and 21st, with the final pencilled for April 26th.
The competing teams are: defending champion Wismar/Christianburg, Mackenzie High, Wisburg, New Silver City, Kwakwani, Linden Technical Institute, Linden Foundation, and Harmony Secondary.
Ryan Hoppie, ExxonMobil’s Community Relations Advisor for Public and Government Affairs, said, “Our collaboration with New Era is a prime example, and we have been working with these guys for a few years now, and we continue to support their initiatives because, as I said, we know the significance of sport for the individual and also the community.”
“For ExxonMobil Guyana, we see the immense value of investing in sports; it gives us the opportunity to support the community and youths, which are two of our focus areas when we seek to invest,” he further added.
Region 10 Education Officer Dawn Barker commended the company for their investment, noting that sports are critical to the development of holistic individuals.
Meanwhile, President of the Upper Demerara Football Association, Wainwright Bethune, implored the players to showcase passion and sportsmanship through the duration of the championship, noting that while the lack of facilities has impeded the senior level, he is elated that the opportunity exists for the youths to partake in the discipline.
