On its third day in Matarkai, Region One (Barima-Waini), a team from the Ministry of Labour on Wednesday conducted inspections and awareness sessions at various mining sites, primarily focusing on the gold mining sector.
The ongoing initiative is being done in conjunction with the Guyana Geo-logy and Mines Commission (GGMC) and the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI), a release yesterday from the Ministry of Labour said.
The team consisted of Assistant Chief OSH Officer, Maxean Bess, OSH Officer for Region One; Chavez Daniels, Labour Officer for Region One; Clement Adams, GGMC Envi-ronmental Technician; Sergio Phillan-der, and GMSTCI instructors Garvin Douglas, Cindy Evans and Shauna Williams.
On April 10, 2024, the team visited mining districts and construction sites in Baramita, held talks and distributed materials on workplace hazards, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and safe mining practices.
Sensitisation sessions were held at the Baramita school, involving students, construction workers, Ministry of Health staff, and teachers. It centred around climate change and its impacts on workplace safety and health.
The team reached 39 workers comprising 15 construction workers, 25 students, seven businesspersons, and four health staff.
Follow-up inspections will be done to ensure compliance with the regulations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Chapter 99:06 of the laws of Guyana, the release said.
