Gov’t’s procurement of patrol vessel 190 OPV must be commended

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my commendation to the Government of Guyana for its recent announcement regarding the purchase of the French Model 190 offshore patrol vessel (OPV). Although the model 190 may have higher associated costs compared to its counterparts from other countries, French naval vessels tend to be highly sophisticated when compared to their counterparts. For this reason, this decision marks a significant milestone in bolstering Guyana’s maritime capabilities and underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing national security and maritime safety in the region.

The acquisition of the French Model 190 OPV represents a strategic investment in Guyana’s defense and law enforcement infrastructure. With its advanced technology, versatile design, and proven performance, the OPV will greatly enhance Guyana’s ability to conduct maritime surveillance, border patrol, law enforcement, and disaster response operations.

In addition to strengthening Guyana’s maritime security, the acquisition of the French OPV demonstrates the government’s proactive approach to addressing emerging security challenges in the region. By investing in state-of-the-art naval assets, Guyana is better positioned to safeguard its territorial waters, combat illicit activities such as smuggling and illegal fishing, and contribute to regional stability and cooperation.

Notwithstanding, the decision to procure the French Model 190 OPV still highlights the government’s haphazard procurement process, albeit their attempt at fostering international friendship, bilateral partnerships, and cooperation in the defense sector. In conclusion, I urge Guyanese citizens to support and commend the government’s decision to acquire the French Model 190 offshore patrol vessel but at the same time always remain vigilant regarding its procurement policies.

Sincerely,

Keith Bernard
