The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that the proposed Plasma Rock Resort project is exempt from the requirement to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
In a notice published yesterday in the state newspaper, the EPA said that according to Section 11(2) of the Environmental Protection Act, Cap. 20:05, Laws of Guyana, it has determined that the project will not significantly affect the environment.
The decision, the notice said, was made based on several factors. These include the minimal impact on air quality, noise levels, hazardous waste generation, wastewater treatment, and ecosystem preservation.
The EPA highlighted that air quality will not be significantly impacted as emissions are primarily from the generator during operation. Additionally, measures such as soundproofing will be implemented to mitigate noise impacts, and hazardous waste will be managed and disposed of in accordance with regulations.
Furthermore, the project is not located near any sensitive ecosystems or protected areas, and there will be no direct discharge of wastewater into waterways. The location for the proposed Plasma Rock Resort is at Plot 2 comprising lots 4, 5 & 6, Block B of Area W, Soesdyke East Bank Demerara.
The EPA has provided a project summary tab for further information on the Plasma Rock Resort. Project summaries are usually available after one week of the publication notice.
The notice cautioned that the EPA’s decision does not indicate project approval, and invites anyone who may be affected by the proposed project to lodge an appeal against the decision within 30 days of the publication. Appeals should be addressed to: The Chairman of the Envi-ronmental Assessment Board via email at eabguyana21@gmail.com or through the EPA website at www.epaguyana.org.
