Several members of the Guyana Public Service Co-operative Credit Union (GPSCCU) have raised concerns about the burdensome need to secure several guarantors for small loans.

This was according to the GPSCCU’s new Committee of Management, yesterday in a press statement.

According to the release this has been a sore issue for the credit union’s members, which the new Committee of Management led by Chairman Trevor Benn has noted and has already taken steps to address it.

The Committee also vowed to review all loan facilities with the intention of making the services more accessible to the general membership, the statement said.

The GPSCCU added that following the decision of  Justice Navindra Singh on Monday 8th April 2024, that, among other things, the Special General Meeting of the GPSCCU, which was held on  March 2nd, 2024, was lawful and valid, the new Management Committee of the Credit Union assumed office on Tuesday 9, April and immediately set about to address several concerns of the Credit Union membership.

The ruling by Justice Singh brought an end to months of wrangling by rival factions of the credit union.

“We wish to assure all members that the Committee of Management as well as its staff, will be deployed in the various regions to listen to the concerns of members, and to address those concerns as far as possible”, the GPSCCU stated.

The new Committee of Management (COM) also expressed gratitude to all the members of the Credit Union and the general public for “their patience and understanding over the past two and half years”.

“We also appreciate the work done by the members to hold the leadership of the Credit Union accountable”, the COM said.

“Members of the Committee of Management would also like to issue its unreserved apology to members of teaching fraternity for the degrading statements made by some members of the former Committee of Management during the standoff on March 4th”, the statement noted.

“It comes as no surprise that that the former Committee who held the Credit Union hostage would seek to cast aspersions on members of the teaching fraternity in particular.  We regret and reject any insults directed towards the membership of the Credit Union and encourage all members to remain committed to their Credit Union”, the GPSCCU highlighted.

The press release also informed that the new Management Committee consists of twelve members namely: Benn, Patrick Mentore,  Eslyn Harris,  Rajdai Jagarnauth,  Vanessa Kissoon,  Mehalai McAlmont,  Christopher Thompson, Dr. John Anderson,  Judah Louisy,  Kirk Fraser,  Candace Enmore, and  Beverly De John. The new executive includes Benn, Chairman;  Mentore, Vice Chairman;  Harris, Secretary and Jagarnauth, Treasurer.
