Guyana lost to Puerto Rico in both the men’s and women’s team segments when the 2024 ITTF Caribbean Championship commenced yesterday in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
In the women’s division, Guyana lost to Puerto Rico 1-3. In the opening match, Guyana got off to a poor start as Natalie Cummings lost to Brianna Burgos 7-11, 7-11, and 4-11. Guyana would equalise the score at 1-1 in the second match, as Chelsea Edghill defeated Fabiola Dias 5-11, 11-9, 11-4, and 11-9.
However, the Puerto Ricans seized the 2-1 advantage as Alondra Rodrigues crushed Thuria Thomas 11-4, 11-7, and 11-2. The Puerto Rican win was then sealed as Burgos downed Edghill in the fourth fixture 11-5, 12-10, and 11-8. The team will face-off against Barbados today at 12:00am.
In the men’s segment, Guyana went down 0-3. Joel Alleyne lost to Angel Naranjo 5-11, 4-11, and 2-11 in the first encounter. Shemar Britton went down to Oscar Birrell 11-9, 9-11. 6-11, and 6-11 in the second fixture.
The contest was then sealed in the third match, as Elishaba Johnson was defeated by Jaddiel Torres 5-11, 12-14, and 10-12. Guyana will return to action today against Aruba at 10:00am.
