President of Guyana and Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Irfaan Ali, has stated that the region reaffirms the importance of adherence to the principles of international law and rules of diplomatic engagement of the Geneva Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
According to a release on Tuesday from the Office of the President, the Head of State made this statement virtually from his office during an emergency meeting of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (CELAC) to deliberate on the violation of the Geneva Convention following the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito by authorities of the Government of Ecuador.
“The member states of the Caribbean community, CARICOM, reaffirm the importance of adherence to the principles of international law and rules of diplomatic engagement enshrined in the Geneva Convention, which codifies the inviolability of diplomatic missions and consular offices,” the President stated.
He spoke of CARICOM’s deep concern that the Republic of Ecuador has recently taken actions that have violated the premises of the Embassy of Mexico in Quito and expressed the hope that the issue could be settled peacefully.
“We anticipate that both states seek to resolve the matter through dialogue and access to the relevant multilateral process, with a view to ensuring that our region remains one of peace. This must be the priority of all of us: to ensure that this region of our remains is a zone and a place of peace and cooperation,” he added, according to the release.
