A minibus operator appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday where he was charged with causing damage to private property.

It was alleged that on March 30, at Croal Street and Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown, Corlon Bailey, 34, unlawfully damaged one rear view mirror and one side view mirror, the total value being $210,000.

Bailey pled not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor told the court that on the day in question Bailey became “irate” during a confrontation and damaged the items in a fit of rage. The court also heard that he had been previously charged with several traffic offences.

During the proceedings, Bailey said that he was prepared to compensate the complainant, who said he wanted $300,000.

Bailey’s mother, who was present in court, was asked how much they were prepared to offer in court yesterday, and she responded that they planned to replace the mirrors by purchasing them online. The victim however stated that he preferred to be compensated instead, and was offered $60,000 to be given on yesterday’s date. The magistrate however replied “so little” and the amount was raised to $100,000 to be repaid yesterday along with bail being set at $60,000.

The magistrate also placed Bailey and the victim on a bond to keep the peace, and if broken Bailey will face up to three weeks imprisonment.

The matter was adjourned to May 29 for the payment of the balance.
