US Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer yesterday spoke on the phone with President Irfaan Ali to discuss regional security and stability as well as ways to deepen the bilateral relationship, including the US’s “unwavering support for Guyana’s sovereignty”.
This is according to a readout yesterday from the White House. The mention of sovereignty is seen as significant in the context of recent bellicose behaviour by Venezuela towards Guyana and the expected re-imposition today of oil sanctions by Washington on Caracas.
The readout said that during the call, Finer welcomed Guyana’s leadership as the current Chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Finer and Ali both reiterated the importance of urgently increasing international support for Haitian-led efforts and the Multinational Security Support mission to help Haitians restore security and pave the way toward free and fair elections. They also discussed other shared priorities, including energy security and climate change, the readout said.
