The University of Guyana (UG)’s Faculty of Engineering and Technology has received its first international accreditation for the Associate of Science in Petroleum Engineering and the Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from the London-based International Energy Institute.

According to a press statement issued by the university, the accreditation comes after a successful accreditation evaluation visit by a five-man team hosted by UG in February of this year. During this visit, a positive verbal report was given by the team and a formal notification was recently received by the University.

The release explained that the programmes in petroleum engineering were introduced in the 2017/2018 academic year in collaboration with the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT). Thus far, the programmes have been highly successful, graduating two batches in the associate’s programme and the first batch of thirty in the bachelor’s degree last November. Additionally, the programmes in energy, oil, and gas have been some of the most sought-after new programmes in the Faculty of Engineering, with a significant number of young women enrolling.

The release further noted that the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Verlyn Klass led and executed the accreditation exercise, alongside Assistant Dean Basheer Khan and UTT’s Professor Neal Alleyene. The international accreditation not only ensures graduates have international recognition and mobility, it said, but also reflects the University of Guyana’s commitment to quality assurance in teaching and learning.

UG’s Vice-Chancellor Paloma Mohamed, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, and the Senior Management Team of the University of Guyana have also extended their congratulations to the faculty and students for this achievement. According to the press statement, graduates of the petroleum engineering programmes are in high demand in Guyana, often securing employment within five months of graduating.

The University of Guyana is currently aligning its programmes with national, regional, and international development contexts. The application process for the Academic Year 2024/2025 is open, with internationally recognized, marketable, and affordable degrees on offer.
