Caribbean Youth Table Tennis Championship
Guyana suffered defeat in the team semifinal round of the boy’s U-19 division, while the girl’s U-15 outfit fell at the group stage in the 2024 Caribbean Youth Table Tennis Championship in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
In the semifinal section, Guyana lost to the Dominican Republic 1-3. Jonathan Van Lange defeated Eduardo Darley 11-9, 6-11, 11-9, and 11-9 to give Guyana the initial advantage. However, Umar Percival lost to Ramon Vila 5-11, 5-11, and 6-11.
Colin Wong was then defeated by Yoel Mendoza 2-11, 5-11, and 8-11, before Van Lange went down to Vila 10-12, 5-11, and 8-11.
In their quarterfinal fixture, Guyana defeated Trinidad and Tobago 3-1. Van Lange defeated Nicholas O’Young 11-7, 11-7, and 11-5 in the first match. Krystian Sahadeo then lost to Malik Gopaul 11–13, 4–11, and 7–11.
However, Colin Wong bested Samuel Humphrey 11-8, 9-11, 7-11, 11-6, and 11-8 to restore Guyana’s advantage, before Van Lange downed Gopaul 11-9, 4-11, 12-10, 5-11, and 11-8 to clinch the win.
In their final group stage fixture, Guyana crushed Grenada 3-0. Van Lange thrashed Qwanell Walker 11-3, 11-2, and 11-5, while Percival downed Cedric Marquez 11-4, 11-8, and 15-13, and Sahadeo brushed aside Dewayne Dinnoh-Newland 11-2, 12-10, and 11-2.
Meanwhile, in the U-15 Girl’s segment, Guyana was eliminated following defeats to Puerto Rico and the host nation.
In their first fixture yesterday, Guyana thumped Trinidad and Tobago 3-0. Jasmine Billingy downed Jerisse Elder 8-11, 11-5, 11-5, and 11-6, while Akira Watson edged Lyliana Boodhan 11-6, 6-11, 5-11, 11-6, and 11-6, and Samara Sukhai crushed Jannah Mohammed 11-3, 11-8, and 11-4.
However, the Guyanese were bested by Puerto Rico 0-3. Billingy lost to Naymaris Martinez 11-5, 8-11, 8-11, 12-10, and 10-12, while Watson went down to Valentina Davila 5-11, 2-11, and 6-11, and Samara was defeated by Camila Rosario 6-11, 6-11, and 7-11.
Similarly, Guyana then lost to the Dominican Republic 0-3, which sealed their exit. Jasmin Billingy went down to Yesmeily Guerrero 8-11, 9-11, and 4-11, while Samara Sukhai lost to Dafne Sosa 6-11, 2-11, and 13-15, and Akira Watson went down to Mercedes Figueroa 7-11, 4-11, and 4-11.
