Joshi emerges victorious in Women’s National Chess Qualifier

Aditi Joshi was crowned the winner of the Women’s National Chess Championship Qualifier following the conclusion of the seven-round event on Sunday at the National Racquet Centre, Woolford Avenue, and Camp Street.

This was confirmed by a release from the Guyana Chess Federation. According to the correspondence, the 13-year-old Joshi, who is also the national U-14 champion, overcame the 19 other participants to finish with 6.5 points to capture the crown, in the process recording an unbeaten record of six wins and a draw.

Finishing in second place was Shazeeda Rahim with 6 points, while Ciel Clement, who drew with Joshi in their fixture, rounds out the top three with 5.5 points.

The other top nine finishers are: Treskole Archibald (4.5 points), Parnita Kishun (4 points), 10-year-old Chelsea Harrison (4 points), Sasha Shariff (3.5 points), Nellisha Johnson (3.5 points), and Emma John (3.5 points).

The aforesaid nine competitors will advance to the National Women’s Championship and challenge incumbent Jessica Callender for the coveted title. The Women’s Championship will be staged on April 27th, 28th, May 1st, and 5th, respectively.

Meanwhile, Callender said,” Having won last year’s championship with no losses and only two draws, I have set high expectations for myself heading into this year’s title defence. I recognise the incredible talent and dedication of all my competitors, and I am excited for the challenge this will bring.”

Ciel Clement finished in third place and earned a berth in the Women’s National Chess Championship.

“These tournaments are part of the qualifying process for the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, in September this year. Top performers will gain Grand Prix points from these tournaments and the 2024 Grand Prix Tourneys, which will be tallied and calculated to see who will make the top five for the Guyana female team”, the release stated.
