Dear Editor,
It is pleasing some concrete action is being taken against the two private security companies, whose employees were recently involved in activities, which resulted in deadly consequences. All private security companies should be inspected, staff, particularly those handling weapons reevaluated, and where lacking retraining ordered. The emergence of security companies, as the country expands its economic growth, will continue to happen. Strict monitoring and enforcement of regulations should be continuous and not when occurrences, as in the two recent deadly cases, happens.
In an unrelated matter, I was disappointed to see GTI’s “Jill of all Trade” Exhibition has passed. While I heard about the exhibition details as to when and where were not available. Was it a case of poor publicity? Could a hold-over be considered? Women making their mark in jobs and fields of endeavour long considered the male domain, must be celebrated. I regret missing this exhibition and look forward to it becoming an annual feature on GTI’s calendar of activities.
Would the GITC consider such an initiative and maybe, just maybe, a collaboration with GTI to host a large exhibition, where skill sets can be displayed? While I am at it why not include TVET and GuySuCo Training Centre and other training centres across the country, such as Linden, in a massive show of our young people training and upgrading skills to meet our evolving, growing demands?
Maybe the authorities might find the suggestion to have some merit worthy of consideration. The cases mentioned of the decisions taken on the private security firms and the GTI’s exhibition are indicative of worthwhile initiatives and must be applauded and supported.
Sincerely,
Shamshun Mohamed
