-captains promise quality football
Ahead of today’s Milo Schools U-18 Football Tournament final, the captains and coaches of the finalists, Waramuri Primary Top and Chase’s Academic Foundation, met for a face-off yesterday at the Spice Garden Restaurant, Brandsville Hotel, Pike Street.
Chase’s Academic Foundation skipper Bryan Wharton, who has been prolific in front of goal, was full of praise for the tournament and the opportunity it gives young footballers to express their talent. He voiced confidence in his team ahead of today’s final but pointed out that his side is wary of the challenge that Waramuri presents.
His opposite number, Odel Homes, also echoed similar sentiments about his team’s capabilities, and promised to put on a final full of quality football for fans to enjoy.
This is the 10th Edition of the Petra Organisation-run tournament and the final between the two sides is slated for 7 pm today at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
Preceding the final at 5 pm will be the third-place showdown between President’s College and Dolphin Secondary.
Chase’s Academic Foundation sealed their final berth with a 4-0 triumph over PC on Thursday, while Waramuri Primary Top of Region 1, had to dig deep to come back from a 2-0 deficit in the first half against Dolphin. In the end, they forced a 2-2 draw at the end of regulation and extra time and booked their place in the final with a 4-3 win via a penalty shootout.
Today’s tournament winners will claim the $300,000 cash prize on offer along with medals and a trophy while the runners-up, third and fourth place finishers will also pocket prize money which will go towards projects at their respective schools.
The tournament has been made possible by Massy Distribution under their Nestle ‘MILO’ brand with support from the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Football Federation (GFF). Other sponsors include the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the Ministry of Local Government, Yellow Steel Inc. and MVP Sports.
