Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Berbice leg
East Bank Gunners were crowned the champion of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Berbice Zone, overcoming former two-time victor Trafalgar by a 1-0 score on Saturday evening at the New Amsterdam basketball court.
The only conversion of the encounter was fashioned by eventual tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) awardee Sherwin Nicholson in the first half of extra time, after regulation time failed to separate the teams.
With the result, the East Bank Gunners secured their second title in the division, as they pocketed $400,000 and the championship trophy. They also earn an automatic berth to the national championship in August. On the other hand, Trafalgar received $300,000 and the corresponding accolade.
In the third-place playoff, the Big Ballers thrashed the Young Guns 3-0. Neil Linton led the rout with a double, while Ryan Solomon netted once. Due to the outcome, the Big Ballers pocketed $200,000 and the respective trophy, while the Young Guns walked away with $100,000 and the fourth-place accolade.
On the individual side, Nicholson, who was adjudged the MVP, will receive a football turf from Colours Boutique.
In the earlier semifinal segment, the East Bank Gunners squeaked past the Young Guns 1-0. Nicholson was on target for the victory following a second-half conversion.
Also, Trafalgar Square needled the Big Ballers 1-0 on penalty kicks after regulation time ended 1-1. Prior to the aforesaid ending of the fixture, Evlon Fordyce equalised for Trafalgar after Evon Smith had pushed the Big Ballers into the initial lead.
