Thirty-two families from Laing Avenue, Georgetown, each received a voucher worth $250,000 for building materials through the ‘Laing Avenue Housing Grant’ from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA). These materials will be used to help each family improve their living conditions.
A release from the CH&PA yesterday said that the voucher distribution was led by the Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, and Senior Community Development Officer at the CH&PA, Antanette Bennett at the St. Pius Primary School. This marks the third round of distributions, following a commitment made by Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo last November, the release said. The Ministry previously distributed ninety vouchers to families on two separate occasions.
According to the CH&PA, Croal highlighted that a total of $50 million has been allocated and approximately 200 households are eligible under this initiative. “To date we have issued the value of over $31.5 million worth of vouchers on this simple programme,” Croal said. He further stated that a number of households have outstanding documentation and urged them to finalize these as soon as possible. Croal also underscored the positive impact of the programme in assisting vulnerable Guyanese families and emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusive programmes that benefit all citizens.
The vouchers are redeemable at the following suppliers: Toolsie Persaud Ltd., Cemmax Procurement and Contracting, Gafsons Industries Ltd., National Hardware and Muneshwers Hardware Store. Additionally, the release said that each unit owner or occupier will receive $100,000 to assist with labour costs for the rehabilitation.
