Colts squeaked past Sonics by a 90-86 score when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) U-23 Championship continued on Wednesday evening at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
Carmelo Mon-Son-Hing led the victor with 24 points. The next best scorer with 16 points was Jaden Simon, while the combination of Ronoko Vaughn and Dimitri Rankin chipped in with 10 and eight points, respectively.
For the loser, Kurvin Mars recorded a game-high 37 points, while Shameer Hope assisted with 18 points. Supporting them with 10 and eight points, respectively, were Marvin Mars and Kareem Wilson.
The first quarter effectively set the tone of the contest, as it failed to separate the two teams at 16-16. The Colts then secured a marginal lead heading into the halftime interval, outscoring the Sonics 12-11 to lead 28-27 at the conclusion of the second stanza.
The lead was marginally extended by the Colts upon the resumption of play, as they once again outscored the Sonics 29-28 to enter the final stanza with an with an advantage of 57-55 following the conclusion of the third period.
The fourth quartet proved to be the highest scoring team of the contest for both teams, with the Colts emerging via a 33-31 score to secure the hard-fought win.
The tournament continues on Saturday at the same venue with a doubleheader.
