In the first ever ‘Guyana Media Games’ sponsored by the Office of the Prime Minister and organised by the National Sports Commission (NSC), the ‘Purple Heart Posse’ took top honours as Guyana’s media operatives downed cameras, pens and keyboards to take part in a day of sports at the Eve Leary Ground in Kingston.
Led by captain Jemima Holmes, Purple Heart Posse, one of six teams named after Guyana’s indigenous trees, captured the 7-a-side football and cricket to shoot clear of the other five teams; Team Jatoba, Bulletwood, Wallaba Knights, Kirukua Titans and Team Green Heart.
The momentum saw Purple Heart Posse accrue 100+ points after placing in the top three of every event including the lime and spoon, 4x50m relays, 50m dash, sack race and watermelon eating competition. Godfrey Broomes and team captain of the Purple Heart Posse raced away with the Male and Female MVP accolades respectively.
Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister, responsible for Communications, Kwame McCoy was on hand to present medals and trophies after the day-long events.
Minister McCoy in his post competition comments commended the turnout of Media Operatives and hailed the success of the ‘Games’ urging the participants to foster greater inclusivity to bridge the gender gap within the workforce.
The ‘Media Games’ was a part of the Office of the Prime Minister’s events for World Press Freedom Day which was observed on Friday, May 3.
