Herstelling 2nd Bridge health hazard is counterproductive to gov’t’s healthy communities’ national plans

Dear Editor,

Please permit me space to draw the attention of the authorities to a health hazard situation in my community; Herstelling 2nd Bridge, where a resident has the drain blocked with stone and sand preventing waste water from draining off since October 2023.

I read that the President was in Region 7 updating the people on the Government’s plan on building safer and healthier communities. It is counterproductive to have a senior Ministry of Health official indulging in an act that is at variance with that vision and efforts.

I approached her on multiple occasions to have her look into the situation and get the sand removed from the drain. Other neighbours spoke to her as well. She did nothing. I made a report at the Herstelling/Farm NDC. I wrote to appeal to the Permanent Secretaries of both Ministries of Health and Housing and Water for their attention to the matter. The situation remains.

As the rainy season is here, the Ministry of Health cannot defeat Malaria and Dengue if officials continue to have this sort of attitude.

Sincerely,

Aderemi Deji
