A 19-year-old is now in police custody after she allegedly set a fire that resulted in the destruction of her mother-in-law’s West Coast Berbice house.

According to the police, the fire occurred at around 11:00 pm on Saturday at Lot 30 Kingelly Village, West Coast Berbice and was deliberately set by Treasha James, 19, unemployed, and of the same address.

The house belonged to Jean Harte and she reported that on the date and time in question she was at home with the suspect when the teenager ran upstairs and told her that she had lit the mattress in the bedroom on the lower floor.

The release said Harte then ran downstairs, saw smoke, and started to disconnect the gas bottle. Both of them then ran out of the building as the fire quickly spread in the bedroom.

The fire service was summoned and upon arrival extinguished the fire. However, by that time, the building was gutted, the police said.

The suspect was later contacted by police at the Kingelly Public Road, informed of the allegation made against her, and was cautioned and arrested. She is in custody at Weldaad Police Station.
