Unidentified man dies after hit by police constable’s car

Police in Regional Division 4 C are investigating a fatal crash which occurred yesterday at about 01:45 hrs on Coldingen Public Road, East Coast Demerara, resulting in the death of an unidentified pedestrian estimated to be about 60 years old.

According to a police press release, the incident involved motor car PAE 2960 driven by a police constable who resides at Lot 15 North Enmore, East Coast Demerara and the pedestrian, who was of East Indian descent and clad only in dark blue and white boxers (underpants).

The constable alleged that the man had suddenly walked onto the road into the path of his vehicle and despite applying brakes and every effort not to, he collided with the pedestrian, the police release said. Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned and the pedestrian was examined by a doctor and pronounced dead at the scene. His body was escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

A breathalyser test conducted on the driver showed that he had not been drinking. He was served with notice of intended prosecution and the vehicle was lodged to be examined by a licensing and certifying officer. Investigations are ongoing, the police said.
