Guyana’s reigning women’s table tennis champion, Chelsea Edghill will head into action today in Lima, Peru, seeking Olympic Games qualification at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Americas Olympic Qualification tournament. Edghill is the only Guyanese who will be participating at the tournament after her compatriot Shemar Britton was forced to give up participation due to his exams at the Hugh Wooding Law School conflicting with the competition dates.
The tournament will serve off today and is the final qualification window for the table tennis players throughout the Americas and Caribbean.
In 2020, Edghill’s name went down in the history books as the first Guyanese and first female from the English-speaking Caribbean to compete at the Olympic Games.
Today, Edghill’s first hurdle will be Venezuela’s Roxy Gonzalez in the Female Round of 16. That match is slated to begin at 1:45 pm.
