Edghill experiences Olympic setback following Americas Qualification exit

National table tennis champion Chelsea Edghill experienced a setback in her bid to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games as she was eliminated from the International Table Tennis Federation’s (ITTF) Americas Olympic Qualification event in Lima, Peru, yesterday.

Edghill, who competed at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, lost to Roxy Gonzalez of Venezuela 6-11, 7-11, 11-9, 6-11, and 13-15.

Edghill became the first table tennis player from Guyana and the first female player from the English-speaking Caribbean region to compete at the Olympic Games during her 2020 Tokyo campaign. Edghill competed at the aforesaid event owing to a universal invitation from the Tripartite Commission awarded to athletes from smaller nations.

During her campaign, she defeated two-time Olympian Sally Yee of Fiji 4-1, 11-5, 4-11, 11-3, 11-6, and 11-8 in the preliminary round. However, Edghill lost to Yubin Shin of South Korea 11-7, 11-8, 11-1, and 12-10.
