Both the mother-in-law and the wife of convicted prisoner, Jose Awad, who escaped from the Lusignan Prison, East Coast Demerara on Tuesday afternoon, are currently in police custody assisting with investigation, as the search continues for him, a Guyana Prison Service (GPS) release stated yesterday.
According to the GPS, the officer in charge of the Lusignan Prison confirmed that the inmate contacted his wife after he managed to escape.
Awad, who hails from Redlock Lima Sands, Essequibo, is serving a two-year sentence for break and enter and simple larceny.
Members of both the prison service and the police force along with joint services personnel, are actively working to recapture the inmate.
The GPS in a statement on Tuesday had informed that Awad escaped at around 1 pm while labouring at the snackette in the compound of the Cecil Kilkenny Training School. The prisoner was left unsupervised for a short period of time and seized the opportunity to get away. Several search teams have been engaged in a bid to recapture him.
It also informed that the supervising officer will be placed under close arrest while the prison service and the police conduct their investigation.
The Director of Prisons is appealing to members of the public, relatives, and friends, who may have any relevant information as to the whereabouts of the escapee, to contact the authorities so that he can be captured and returned to the prison.
An appeal was also made to the escapee to surrender to the police or relevant authority, “to avoid any serious confrontation that is likely to result in the use of force.”
The release assured that all information will be treated with the highest degree of confidence and that the rights of the escapee will be respected and upheld.
Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of Jose Awad is asked to contact the Officer-in-Charge at Lusignan Prison or the nearest police station.
