NA driver hits scooter after `mistakenly’ pressing accelerator

A woman is now in the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after she was struck by a motor car along the Corentyne Public Road whose driver claimed that he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brakes.

The accident happened on Wednesday at 9.40 am along the Kildonan Public Road, Corentyne and involved Averion Bagot, 52, of Lot 10 New Savannah Park Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, who was driving motor car PAF 4803 and Nafeeza Mohanlall, 41, of Yakusari, Black Bush Polder who was riding an electric scooter with Thakur Brijlall, 51, of Lot 1 A Kildonan Village, Corentyne.

According to information gathered, motor car PAF 4803 was proceeding west along the Bush Lot Public Road, Corentyne, allegedly at a fast rate behind the electric cycle which was proceeding in the same direction.

Bagot has since claimed to police that upon seeing mud in his drive lane, he erroneously applied the accelerator on his vehicle instead of his brake which caused him to lose control and hit the e-cyclist before ploughing into a fence and post in a yard located on the southern side of the Kildonan Village Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.

As a result of the collision, the e-cyclist was flung off of her cycle and sustained injuries about her body.

She was picked up in an unconscious condition and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where she eventually regained consciousness.

She has since been admitted at the regional hospital in a stable condition.

Bagot has since been arrested for questioning. A breathalyzer test carried out on him following the accident read zero.
