Azim Khan, the 22-year-old Guyana Defence Force (GDF) private who was shot in a home invasion on May 6, was taken off life support yesterday afternoon and remains in the intensive care unit (ICU) in a critical condition.
Meanwhile, no arrest has been made in the shooting that occurred at the soldier’s Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara residence.
Tasha Alli, Khan’s sister-in-law, told the Stabroek News yesterday that two days ago, he underwent surgery for a lung infection and then he was placed on life support machine in the ICU. However, yesterday afternoon, he was taken off of the life support and remains in the ICU in a critical condition.
“We don’t know how he will come along now because it’s just today [yesterday] the doctors took him off of the machine… So they [doctors] saying so far that he’s healing from the bottom but the part with his lungs is taking time. He is still in a critical state in the ICU room, he’s not out from there as yet. He can hear you and see you but he can’t talk much right now. He takes oxygen.”
Concerning the arrest of a suspect/s in relation to the shooting, his brother Ameir Hussain said he is in constant contact with CID officers, and so far, although the CCTV footage was reviewed by the police, no one has yet been apprehended. However, the updates he is getting from police give him confidence that they are working on the case.
Private Khan was left in a critical condition after he was shot by one of three masked men who invaded his Mon Repos residence early Monday morning, May 6, as he was drinking with a relative and neighbour.
He was admitted to the intensive care unit of the GPH after being shot twice. The first bullet entered his chest and exited his back, while the second bullet grazed his back. According to relatives, he was robbed of his cellular phone, gold chain and cash.
