Gold Star, led by a first-half double from the experienced Randy De Jonge, ensured that Tapakuma remained winless in the Essequibo Coast/Pomeroon Football Association’s (ECPFA) Senior Men’s League, following a 2-1 victory.
Staged at the Anna Regina Multilateral Ground, De Jonge made his presence known as he found the back of the net in the 20th minute to break the deadlock. De Jonge then completed his double, as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet three minutes later.
The score would remain unchanged heading into the halftime interval. Although Navin Sandy was able to reduce the deficit for Tapakuma in the 78th minute, the aforesaid conversion only proved to be a consolation as Gold Star maintained their marginal lead to seal the win.
With the win, Gold Star continued their unbeaten run, which extends to two wins in as many victories, to sit in third place on six points. On the other side, Tapakuma remains in the cellar position at zero points.
The event will resume on Sunday at the same venue with another round of matches. The other competing teams are Queenstown, Dominators, Charity, Richmond, and Good Hope, who sit in the first, second, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively.
