Guyana still to sign new EU-ACP pact

On 15 November 2023 the partnership between the European Union (EU) and its 27 Member States, and the 79 Member States of the Organisation of African Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) was solidified with the signing of the Samoa Agreement in Apia, Samoa. The historic signing ceremony a first to be held in the Pacific, was attended by more than 250 delegates from across the four continents. (https://www.oacps.org/)

More than two months after this country said it was ready to sign on to the Samoa Agreement, this still has not been done with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hugh Todd, assuring that Georgetown will be a signatory to the agreement at the next available opportunity.

“Not as yet. As you know we had to go through the documents because when the negotiations began we were not involved… we had to put together a team to meet with them and got to a point where we are satisfied,” Todd told the Sunday Stabroek  last week when asked for an update.

“We will sign at the next available opportunity, possibly in Samoa later this year or in Antigua later this month [where is there is the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4)],” he added.
