The Ministry of Education says it has taken another step towards bridging the educational gap between the hinterland and the coast.

According to a release on Thursday from the Ministry, teacher trainees at Monkey Mountain, Potaro-Siparuni are now able to conveniently access their learning materials through the Cyril Potter College of Education’s Moodle platform, a result of the efforts of the Management Information Systems Unit to provide internet connectivity in the hinterland community. They have also received laptops to assist them in their training.

It was also pointed out that this benefit is being made available for all teacher trainees even in deep hinterland communities.

The release explained that Moodle is a Learning Management System (LMS) used to manage, deliver, and measure training and learning online. As such, the goal is to provide hinterland trainees with access to Moodle to enhance their learning alongside printed modules. Hinterland lecturers will also be granted access to these online resources.

To date, 99 per cent of teachers across the country are trained or are in training and is in keeping with the ministry’s education sector plan to have 100 per cent trained teachers in the classroom, the release said. The Ministry posited that this has facilitated a “significant” decrease in the teacher to student ratio in classrooms and is expected to produce a higher quality of education across all levels, the release added.
