Two men were shot and a firearm seized during a police operation in Agricola on Saturday night.
According to a police report, in response to a tip about an illegal firearm possessed by a 31-year-old resident, officers arrived at the man’s Brutus Street residence around 10:00 pm and found him sitting in front of his premises with several other men.
The officers approached the suspect, informed him that they had received information about an illegal firearm, and requested to conduct a search. The report continued that the suspect refused and became hostile, leading the officers to attempt to search him.
The press release said the man then pulled out a 9mm pistol and pointed it at them. In response, one of the officers drew his service pistol and fired at the man, striking him in the knee, it added. Both he and the gun fell to the ground, and the officer took possession of the gun.
As the officers attempted to place the man in a police vehicle, the release said, a hostile crowd gathered and the man was taken away from the officers and placed in a white Axio motor car bearing registration number PAD 7596.
The release said that the police then called for backup, and a team from the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) responded. During the chaos, a man from the crowd rushed toward one of the police officers, armed with a cutlass and the officer fired his weapon, striking him on his left ankle, the release said.
It said that the two injured men were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where they are receiving treatment under police guard. The seized firearm was processed, and it was found to contain 12 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
