Police are investigating an accident on Thursday night that claimed the life of Jonathan Gomes, a 27-year-old of Canary Street, Tucville, Georgetown.
According to police, the accident occurred at about 20.25 hours on Thursday on the Columbia Public Road, Mahaicony. It involved motor lorry, GSS 6980, driven by Odit Ramdeen of Airy Hall, Mahaicony, and motor car, PVV 3618, driven by Gomes.
Initial investigations revealed that the lorry was proceeding east along the public road when the car, PVV 3618, that was proceeding west, overtook several vehicles at a bend in the road at a fast rate causing him to end up in the path of the lorry.
The driver of motor lorry tried to avoid a collision by turning onto the parapet, but in spite of his efforts, the car hit the front of the lorry, causing the lorry to collide with a utility pole on the side of the road.
As a result of the collision, the driver of the car was injured and was taken out of the vehicle in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens and placed into a police vehicle along with the driver of the lorry. They were taken to the Mahaicony Public Hospital where the driver of the car was pronounced dead on arrival. The lorry driver was treated and sent away.
A breathalyzer test conducted on the lorry driver revealed no trace of alcohol. He is presently in custody assisting with the investigation.
