Two parcels of cannabis were recently found in the engine compartment of a bus searched at Mango Landing and one man is in custody, the police said yesterday in a statement.
Police in Regional Division #8 during an exercise at Mango Landing Police Outpost, stopped a route 72 minibus with registration number BAF 4473 driven by Roger Smith, at the check point. This vehicle was en route to Mahdia from Georgetown.
There were four passengers in the bus, the release said. A search was carried out on the passengers and their belongings, but nothing illegal was found. Whilst searching the engine compartment of the bus, two plastic-wrapped parcels were found. When checked, they contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.
The driver and passengers were questioned, and one of the passengers, a 26 years old miner, claimed ownership of the narcotics found.
The 26-year-old was told of the offence committed, cautioned, and arrested. He was then escorted along with the driver and suspected cannabis to Mahdia Police Station where the cannabis was weighed and amounted to 2 kg 035 grams. The 26-year-old remains in custody.
