Guyana’s heavyweight boxer Emmanuel Pompey had his dream of qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games crushed yesterday at the second and final Olympic Boxing Qualifier in Bangkok, Thailand.

Facing Georgia’s Georgii Kushitashvili in a 92kg heavyweight contest, Pompey was under pressure from the get-go and could not last the full five rounds with the Georgian pugilist. Korean Referee Jung Sook Cho was forced to stop the fight a mere 1 minute 57 seconds into the second round after he saw that Pompey was being battered relentlessly.

At the time of the RSC (Referee Stopped Contest) decision, four of the five judges had Kushitashvili ahead at 10:9 while one had the Georgian at 10:8.

Pompey’s defeat means that of the four Guyanese boxers who participated in the Qualifier tournament, only Keevin Allicock remains, having progressed from the round of 64 on Friday last in the 57kg category with a third round stoppage of his opponent.

Pompey joins Desmond Amsterdam and Joel Williamson in exiting the tournament.

Allicock, who took part in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be in action today in the 57Kg class, facing up against Turkish boxer Batuhan Ciftci.
