Guyana’s Keevin ‘Lightning’ Allicock’s push for qualification to a second Olympic Games was dashed by Turkey’s Batuhan Ciftci in their five-round 57kg encounter yesterday in the Road to Paris Qualifier in Bangkok, Thailand.

Fighting in the round of 32 segment, the Turkish boxer held an edge over Allicock throughout the fight, which was reflected on the judges’ scorecards.

While Allicock battled on gamely, two of the five judges had Ciftci winning 29/28, with two others giving the Turk scores of 30/27. Only Slovakian judge Radoslav Simon had Allicock winning 29/28.

Allicock, who participated in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, won his round of 64 fixture last week, while three other Guyanese fighters, Desmond Amsterdam, Joel Williamson, and Emmanuel Pompey, could not get past the preliminary rounds over the weekend.

The quartet’s Olympic aspirations were among the last for Guyanese athletes.
