Narrow escape for miner after 17ft wall collapses

An employee of Airton De Oliveira in Matarkai, Region One (Barima-Waini) is recovering from minor injuries after a 17-foot pit wall collapsed at the mining site of Arakaka Perseverance, Matarkai, on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at approximately 7:30 am.

The Ministry of Labour yesterday said that according to information received from relatives and witnesses, the victim,  Nolan Leung, was jetting using a six-inch water pump near the pit wall when it collapsed, injuring him in the process.

He was subsequently transported to the Port Kaituma District Hospital for treatment.

Occupational Safety and Health Officer (OSH) with Responsibility for Region One, Chavez Daniels, is leading the investigation, which has been undertaken by the Ministry’s OSH Department.

This investigation is ongoing.
