To have NRF money generating employment abroad is ludicrous

Dear Editor,

To have money sitting in the NRF (invested abroad, generating employment abroad) for future generations when Guyanese today are facing hardship is ludicrous. Some money from the NRF should be used to reduce the unemployment level in Guyana by investing in sustainable businesses. One area that is underserved in Guyana is the banking sector. I envisage the creation of a national bank eventually with branches in every major City, towns and villages in Guyana. This will boost commerce in these City, towns and villages.

This national bank can then lend money to businesses that have at least over 80%-90% of their workforce as Guyanese in Guyana. A quick calculation: US$1,000m (one billion US dollars) can generate about 10,000 jobs depending on industry. I do not envisage just a national bank as that would be like putting all your eggs in one basket. I also envisage a national construction company because Guyana’s dilapidated infrastructure needs rehabilitating continuously.

Sincerely,

Sean Ori
